Though I opened the doors of Ivory Howell Counseling in 2009, I have been in training for my career as a therapist since 1999 when I began my first semester as a psychology major at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Kentucky. After completing my studies at KWC, I earned a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling in 2005 from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I then became a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (KY-1057) in October of 2008.
Much of my clinical experience came from the eight years of work I did at New Beginnings Sexual Assault Support Services, first as an outreach coordinator and then later as a clinical director and therapist. During that time, I received extensive training in the treatment of trauma-related disorders such as post-traumatic stress, generalized anxiety disorder, and depression. I regularly seek continuing education, as I believe in staying current with counseling trends; I am, however, firmly grounded in my roots as a cognitive-behavioral counselor.
Being a cognitive-behavioral counselor means that I practice therapy from the premise that our thinking patterns are generally what control our moods. In other words, if we want to feel better, we must think better. In order to help clients lead manageable, healthy lives, I teach methods by which to modify or replace problematic thinking. While I believe strongly in the therapeutic relationship and the progress that can come about via therapy sessions, clients must set skills learned in therapy in motion in their daily lives to produce optimal results. Additionally, I never pretend to be the expert in my clients' lives. I do not believe in forcing my ideas and beliefs on clients; rather, it is my hope that the information presented in sessions will empower clients to create healthy change for themselves within the framework of their own values and goals.
Beyond providing therapy to clients, I am also partner at Garrard-Howell Therapeutic Partners, LLC. GHTP is a specialty group private therapy practice which I helped create in order to empower outstanding therapists to connect with and serve clients of all ages in need of quality mental health counseling. My personal practice, Ivory Howell Counseling, LLC, is located at the offices of GHTP in beautiful downtown Owensboro, Kentucky.
I also enjoy work with budding therapists and provide supervision for Licensed Professional Counselor Associates.
